How do you plan a road trip without a map? Do you just put everything on text and key into the GPS when you start your road trip?
Today, we are going to share with you guys how to use Google Map to plan a road trip! See how this can save some troubles when you do it all digitally on a map!
Using Google Map to Plan A Road Trip
You will use Google MyMap to save your own maps instead of Google Map. Then hit on “Create a new Map” and you will see the image below:
In general, Google MyMap works like this:
- You create layers
- You find locations
- You add to layer
- You custome the location with icons
Simple, right? That’s how you can plan a road trip with Google Map. Now if you need more details, continue on!
What Are Layers?
Think of it like… transparent papers.
You can write specific details on each of them. If you need to have an overview, you can overlay all the paper together. Otherwise, you can view them separately.
Likewise, you can pin different types of locations on different layers. Then you can view individual layers or all the layers together.
How To Make Use Of Layers
The key is to customise each layer such that the layers are unique to their own. For example, you can separate the locations into attractions, food, points of interests or emergency.
This helps you to quickly filter away those unnecessary pins on the maps when you only need emergency pins.
In this way, it helps you to quickly filter away those unnecessary pins on the maps when you only need emergency pins.
You can also import existing data into Google MyMaps by uploading data using CSV or GPX (GPS data).
All these data can be gotten from a GPS.
You can search for location in the search bar. Then add to the layer. Before you add to the layer, click the layer to ensure the layer is activated (i.e. a blue bar on the layer). In the image below, the layer “Restaurants” is activated.
Making Use of Icons For Each Location
Customising location’s icon can help you to differentiate your points of interests quicker. Once you have added to the layer, you can customise the icons.
Play around and you should be able to hit the page below. The icons are quite extensive. From restaurant to ATM to cafe to Petrol station, any legend you can think of is somehow in this list.
Other than plugging in locations in the map, you can also input the directions! That is a very useful feature!
Hit the icon in the image above. A new layer will be added to the layers. This layer serves as a “directional” layer. You will be able to add in more destination in this layer. We find this very useful if you need to plan different routes for different days.
You can add unlimited destination to same layers. Once you are done with that, you will be able to view the step-by-step instruction.
Via Drawing Tool
Otherwise, you can use drawing tools to draw the routes.
We find this feature very useful when you are looking for restaurants or any attractions near your hotel. You will be surprised how accurate the lines can be snapped to the route.
If you encounter errors when you are editing directions to the map, it is common and normal. I mean, we are not too sure what has happened. It’s probably due to some bugs to the software.
Sometimes, you just have to be a little bit more patience when it comes to this.
All in all, if you are looking for a quick and easy app to plan a trip itinerary, maybe you should take a look at MyMap!
