Converting VMX to QCOW2

If you are unaware, Microsoft has released free virtual images for developers to test Microsoft Edge and versions of IE8 through IE11 here. This is really very useful and convenient for developers who are testing their web applications with different IEs and Edge.

You can download the virtual imagesΒ in the following format:

  • VirtualBox
  • VMWare
  • HyperV
  • Vagrant
  • Parallels

Unfortunately if you prefer to use QEMU, this option is not available as a download from Microsoft. However, you can convert some of them to QEMU using a convertor.

qemu-img convert -p -O qcow2 new.qcow2

I guess this is the quickest way to get yourself on hand with a Windows virtual image. You don’t even have to wait for the installation! But do note that there’s a trial of (90 days?) to the image that you downloaded from Microsoft!
