My partner and I really needed a break from the hectic work in Singapore. Ever since we started our new jobs, we were so stressed that we sometimes would wake up in the middle of the night thinking about work.
Unfortunately for us, we do not have the luxury of taking long leaves at the very last minute at work. Hence, we decided to head to Johor Bahru on a weekend for a short rejuvenation.

Doubletree By Hilton Hotel Johor Bahru
Instead of staying at Amari Johor Bahru or Holiday Villa, we decided to give our virgin experience to the Hilton Honors at Doubletree by Hilton Johor Bahru this time. We paid approximately S$177/night for the King Executive room, which comes with the access to the executive floor.
In general, we felt that it is much more worth it to pay for a better room with executive access. Firstly, we get to drink at happy hour so we don’t have to purchase alcohol from elsewhere. Secondly, we get to eat our meals at the hotel without explicitly paying for any meals. If you think about the total cost that we will incur for buying meals and alcohol from elsewhere, it will be much cheaper for us to get a hotel room with executive lounge.
Location and Check-In Experience
Doubletree By Hilton Hotel is approximately 10-minutes walk away from City Square (JB Sentral). Even though the hotel seems to be very near to the shopping mall, we advise taking cautions when traveling to the hotel by foot. We took a Grabcar for RM 6 because we heard many horror stories about daylight robbery near the premise.
If you are planning to get some late night snacks, we also suggest getting them before you go to the hotel. From what we see, there is nothing around the hotel that you can buy to satisfy your late night cravings. We bought some snacks from Kapitiam before we checked into the hotel.
When we arrived the hotel at 3.00p.m, we were surprised by the number of people queuing at the reception. The hotel staff was distributing their cookies frantically to everyone in the hotel lobby. Unlike most of the other hotels with special treatment for executive floor patrons, Doubletree only has a separate queue for Hilton Honors Gold/Diamond members. Fortunately, the reception was quite efficient and we got our room keys within 15-minutes despite the long queue.
The King Executive Room
The King Executive Room at the hotel offers 31 sqm of space with a comfortable king-sized bed in the room. Personally, we felt that 31 sqm is pretty small for an executive room. The next tier in the hotel, One Bedroom Suite, offers double space! Then again, the room is already perfect for a short getaway. We spent most of our time watching tv on the bed when we were not on the executive floor.
The nice thing about traveling to Johor Bahru is the fact that we don’t have to bring big luggage. Everything we needed for a night can be squeezed in a backpack.
We always look forward to a bathtub in the hotel. Unfortunately, Doubletree by Hilton Hotel does not have such amenity for the King Executive Room. With an exception to the bathtub, we are actually quite happy with the bathroom. It is clean and well-lighted.
Nowadays, most of the hotels that we have stayed in used a transparent glass with controllable bind to create a view from the shower. If you are comfortable with your partner, you can roll up the bind such that you can still watch television when you are showering.
Sometimes, we are so lazy that we did not even bring our bath amenities. Normally we don’t really care about what we used in the hotel, but this time we are really surprised that Doubletree by Hilton Hotel offers Crabtree & Evelyn!
Crabtree & Evelyn has a really nice fragrance. Such a surprise element to our stay is something that really makes us feel happy. Yup, we are easily contented.
Usually, we will bring our swimsuit if we remember to do so. This time, we decided that we want to chill and relax in our room. We went up to the 29th floor at 6.00 p.m to drink and eat some light snacks. Most of the hotels serve pre-dinner light snacks.
If we are going to chill and relax in the room for the entire day, we will definitely go to Doubletree by Hilton Hotel Johor Bahru again. After all, the room is really cozy and the executive floor has enough spread to sustain our late night craving.
If we are gamed to have some night snacks, we will prefer to stay in Holiday Villa so that we can get our lok-lok directly beside the hotel.
At the end of the day, what’s important is your motive of the trip. Do you have any preferences?
