Amari Johor Bahru is a 5-star hotel located right in front of Komtar JBCC mall. Those who visit Bangkok frequently are probably no stranger to this Thai-based hotel and resort chain. Yup, that’s the hotel right opposite of Platinium Fashion Mall.
Similar to Doubletree by Hilton Hotel, the 5-star property is one of the few hotels near City Square Mall that you can book under S$100.
The hotel started its operation early last year. Hence, the rooms are really new. If you are looking for a new place to stay in the vicinity, I will definitely recommend Amari Johor Bahru!
Just like other hotel chains, you will be paying more if you book directly from the website. The cheapest room-type, the Superior King Room, costs around RM 340 (~ S$113)/night. The Junior Suite costs RM 680 (~ S$226)/night. The highest room category in the hotel costs around RM 765 (~ S$255)/night.
You will be able to earn points for the ONYX membership. It’s free and you can sign up on their website. These points can be used to redeem free nights at any hotels under their control.
Amari Johor Bahru has a strict policy on late check-out. If there is a need for you to stay later than 12.00 PM, you can purchase late check-out add-ons for RM 140 (~ S$47). I’m a little bit confused though as there is a contradiction on their website.
It will cost only S$99 to book the Superior King on the platform. If you don’t mind, you can also save some money by booking the Superior Twin Room at only S$87. Bear in the mind that there’s no difference between the two rooms except for bed type.
The Junior Suite room costs only S$198 on Agoda.com, which is the cheapest among all the other platforms.
Amari Johor Bahru is literately a stone-throw away from Komtar JBCC’s main entrance. You can take the exit at the main entrance near Swavorski on Level 1 and cross the road. The hotel is located on top of the shopping mall. You will need to walk into the shopping mall and take the lift up to the hotel lobby.
The signs are very clear so it should not be an issue to find the hotel.
You can find a 7-11 near the lobby of the hotel. If you need some food, you can visit the shopping malls. The hotel is also very near to the streets of the cafes.
There is generally no queue when we check-in at Amari Johor Bahru on a Saturday afternoon. The staff is pretty fast in handling the room key even though she seems to be new to the hotel.
The Junior Suite Room
The Junior Suite room offers 51 sqm space to its patrons. The room comes with complimentary WIFI access and whole-day refreshment at the executive lounge. You can also eat your breakfast at the executive lounge if you have not booked the room with breakfast at the breakfast restaurant.
Upon walking in, the room is really bright and spacious. It’s really spacious for two adults especially when we do not have any luggage with us. In fact, the Junior Suite is more than enough to accommodate a family of 4 (with 2 kids). Yes, the bed is big enough for 2 adults and 2 kids to sleep together.
There is a sofa corner located at the furthest end of the room. The sofa is placed 90 degrees to the television set, which makes it really difficult to watch the channels. Along with the welcome fruits platter, we had also received a handwritten card from the General Manager. That’s a really nice personal touch to the room!
On the other end of the room, you can find an executable table tagged in a corner. This table is perfect to munch all your takeaway food with the loved ones. It’s also the best place to watch the television apart from the bed.
Just like other 5-star properties, Amari Johor Bahru’s Junior Suite is equipped with a coffee maker. There are two complimentary coffee capsules in the room that you can use the coffee machine to brew. You can also find TWG tea bags in the room if you prefer to have tea!
The bathroom of the Junior Suite room is not particularly big for a suite. You can find double sinks in the bathroom such that you and your partner will not have to fight for space in the morning!
If you need to rejuvenate with bubble baths at night, you can rest assured that you can do that in the Junior Suite! You can also find the rain shower in the same area.
Bath amenities at Amari Johor Bahru are in-house but they are rather decent. We have also used the same set at Amari Watergate in Bangkok. If you need more amenities, you can request from the housekeeping!
The Executive Lounge
It makes sense to get access to the executive lounge if you like to have booze and wines during your holiday. As it is difficult to find a variety of alcohol in Malaysia, the executive lounge is a really good addition to the room.
The pre-dinner cocktails and refreshment are served every evening. You can also have your breakfast in the executive lounge in the morning.

We thought that the spread of the evening cocktail could be better but we understand that the executive lounge was newly launched. Hopefully, the lounge could get a wider spread as it becomes more mature in the future!
Amari Johor Bahru is one of my top choices if I need to stay overnight at Johor Bahru. Even though it’s a 5-star property, the price is really reasonable and cheap compared to 5-star hotels in Singapore.
If you are looking for a place to impress your spouse or celebrate a special occasion, the Junior Suite is definitely one of the places you should consider. Otherwise, you can opt for the lowest room category for a quick staycation.
